Retail joy for “Value" Retailers

Poundland, Europe's biggest single-price retailer, has announced a significant increase in turnover.  In 2010-11 the company posted a 34 per cent increase in profit, with turnover increasing 26 per cent to £641m. The retail chain has opened branches across the country at the rate of one a week since April 1990. With more than 380 stores, they employ more than 7,000 staff.  Poundland have a growth strategy of at least 50 new stores per year which will in turn create around 2,000 jobs.

Poundland isn't the only "value retailer” announcing success...

Dunelm, the homeware retailer saw sales rise 8.8 per cent to £299.9million in the six months to year end.  Dunelm added 10 stores in the last 6 months
of the year and said it was on track to hit its target of reaching up to 200 stores.  Dunelm has put a real focus on investing in store renovation and new store openings. 11 new superstores are planned to be opened with 4 of them in the first half year of 2012.  Also 50 per cent of its outlets are now either new or have been refitted in the last three years.
